PWDs and Elderly Urged to Lead the Fight Against Poverty in Ntungamo

By Anthony Kushaba

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the elderly in Ntungamo District have been urged to take a leading role in fighting poverty to enhance their livelihoods and achieve self-sufficiency.

The call was  on Tuesday made by Amiidu Rukundo, the Chairperson for Persons with Disabilities, during the handover of special grants at the Ntungamo District headquarters. The grants, aimed at empowering these vulnerable groups, will provide financial support for small business ventures and family sustenance.

Rukundo emphasized the significance of these grants, stating that they offer a critical lifeline to many PWDs and elderly individuals by enabling them to start income-generating activities.

During the event, a total of five groups of elderly persons received UGX 20 million under the Special Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP). Additionally, 12 groups of persons with disabilities were allocated UGX 52 million under the National Special Grant scheme.

Patrick Rwakabale, the Male District Councillor for Persons with Disabilities, lauded the government and District Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigooba for their continued commitment to prioritizing the needs of persons with disabilities. Similarly, Deborah Kobusingye, the female councillor for PWDs in Ntungamo, commended the initiative, urging beneficiaries to utilize the funds responsibly to improve their living standards.

Ntungamo District Community Development Officer Ambrose Tusiime reiterated the importance of such initiatives in addressing the financial needs of PWDs and the elderly, ensuring they lead dignified lives.

Shallon Birungi, the Principal Assistant Secretary representing the Chief Administrative Officer, challenged group leaders to be exemplary. She emphasized that meaningful community transformation starts with individuals embracing change in their own lives.

The government’s financial support to PWDs and the elderly is part of broader efforts to promote social inclusion and economic empowerment, fostering a self-reliant and resilient society.
