Ntungamo District Launches Road Works on Nyamunuka-Rwitanzi Road

By Anthony Kushaba

Authorities in Ntungamo District, southwestern Uganda, have officially launched construction work on the 7-kilometer Nyamunuka-Rwitanzi road. The road, which connects Nyamunuka Town Council to Bwongyera Sub-County, also serves as a key link between Ntungamo District and neighboring Mitooma District.

The launch ceremony, held at Omukarere Trading Center in Bwongyera Sub-County on Wednesday, was presided over by Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Isaiah Kanyamahane. During his address, Kanyamahane urged the local community to take an active role in the fight against poverty, noting that improved infrastructure will facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to markets, boosting incomes.

"An enhanced road network is critical to economic development. It will not only improve access but also support the transportation of local goods to wider markets," Kanyamahane said.

Ntungamo District Chairperson Sam Muchunguzi Rwakigoba echoed these sentiments, reaffirming the district's commitment to improving its road infrastructure. He disclosed that plans are underway to rehabilitate Rwitanzi Bridge, which links Ntungamo to Mitooma District, to further ease movement and economic exchange between the districts.

According to Ntungamo District Engineer Charles Kusemererwa, the road works will include bush clearing, grading, compacting, spot murraming, and the installation of line culverts and off-shoots. He emphasized that the district would ensure the delivery of quality work, with the project estimated to cost 60 million Ugandan shillings.

Other officials in attendance included Deputy RDC Rosemary Atuhaire, District Vice Chairperson Asuman Kigongo, Secretary for Works Grace Tushabomwe, Secretary for Finance Elijah Atuhaire, along with local leaders and residents who welcomed the development.
