Farmers in Ntungamo district have been urged to embrace safe pesticide usage in a bid to minimize the effects of pesticides on human beings.
The call was on Wednesday made by the Ntungamo district speaker Elijah Atuhaire while speaking at a meeting of the district safe pesticide usage committee held at Ntungamo district headquarters.
Atuhaire revealed that while many Ugandans are engaged in farming as a business which involves the use of pesticides, farmers are not practicing safe pesticide usage practices such as use of protective gear and disposing off the containers for the pesticides.
Atuhaire called on the farmers to engage with extension workers in their respective sub counties to ensure that they minimize the effects of pesticides on their lives.
Eric Muzoora the Ntungamo farmer’s association coordinator revealed that a partnership between the district and Uganda National Association of Community and Occupational Health- (UNACOH) has enabled them to reach out to farmers on best safe pesticide usage practices to ensure that farmers do not get challenges while executing their work.
