Ntungamo Rolls out the Village Agent Model

Ntungamo district has rolled out the village agent model in a bid to promote Agriculture commercialization.
The village agent model which is a private sector –led and market oriented, providing benefits to all value chain actors. The model is not a separate project but only a methodology of improving service delivery.
Speaking at the training of key stakeholders at Ntungamo district council hall today afternoon, The Ntungamo district commercial officer Amon Mutabarura revealed that the model will take an extra mile in linking the farmers with the processors or large scale buyers.
Mutabarura says that the local farmers are to be trained to always help others in ensuring that farmers are enabled to improve on the quantity and quality of production.
The village agents will be responsible for bridging the gap between the traders and the farmers as well as acting as primary service providers.
Esther Atwiine the Ntungamo district Agricultural Officer says that the district has started with the training of Agricultural extension workers, community development officers, councilors, local council three chairpersons among others.
Atwiine says that currently, the ratio of the extension workers in the district in relation to the people they serve is 1-8000 while the standard ratio is 1-500.
Ntungamo district deputy chief administrative officer Leonard Ahimbisibwe revealed that the extension worker, community development officers must take a leading role in commercialization of agriculture so that other locals can learn from them.
